Clinico-pathological evaluation and co-morbidities in superior mesenteric artery thrombosis

Background: Mesenteric artery thrombosis (MAT) is a condition involving occlusion of the arterial vascular supply intestinal system. It severe and potentially fatal illness typically superior mesenteric (SMA), which provides primary to small intestine ascending colon. The may occur due underlying atherosclerotic disease or embolic from distant source, as atrial fibrillation. possesses high mortality rate prompt recognition treatment are utmost importance.Methods: A retrospective, observational, single hospital base study done during period 2015 2020 in department surgery, Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal. Sample size was taken 50 patients.Results: In our study, out patients, 34% patients were age group between 55-65 years, history smoking present 44%, hypertension 36%, past fibrillation 10%, signs peritonitis 62% patients. Out 42% operated while 58% managed conservatively. Amongst 72% partial bowel resection 28% extensive done, 66% discharged died, amongst 21 57% 43% died.Conclusions: this SMA more common with smoking, cardiac diseases (hypertension, fibrillation, ischemic heart disease, CVA), dyslipidaemia. Early intervention thrombolysis bypass surgery needed prevent complications like ischemia.
